How do I live a gospel-centered life if God’s Word is new to me?

First things first, 1 Corinthians 15 says that the gospel is the means by which we are saved. If you’ve given your life to Jesus, then you’ve successfully taken that first step. Though, the verse in its full context says:
“By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain (1 Corinthians 15:2, NIV).”
Paul is telling us here that our belief is done in vain unless we hold firmly to God’s Word. But what does that mean? Let’s look at the phrase “in vain.” Some other meanings for this phrase include: without result, success, or effort—inconsiderably, without purpose, without just cause. Paul is warning us here that those who don’t hold firmly to His Word will find that their belief in the gospel is not enough to produce results. Our belief in the gospel lacks purpose if it is just that—a belief. Paul urges the Corinthians to hold firmly to that which he passed on, “that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day (1 Corinthians 15:3-4a, NIV).”
The gospel isn’t about what you can do for God. It’s about what He’s already done for you. Holding firmly to God’s word doesn’t mean you know the book of Leviticus, front to back. It starts with the simple truth of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. It looks like choosing, day by day, to trust what God has already revealed through Jesus. The gospel isn’t something you graduate from—it’s the foundation you return to over and over again.
Paul’s message to the Corinthians is the same for us today: Don’t just hear the gospel—hold on to it. When you anchor your life in Jesus’ death and resurrection, your faith won’t be “in vain.” Instead, it becomes the very power of God at work in you, shaping you, sustaining you, and sending you out to live with purpose.
